Helsinki WWII Walking Tour: Finland’s Fight for Survival

What if one of the smallest nations in Europe had to fight for its very survival? Discover how Helsinki endured air raids, destruction, and uncertainty during World War II, and how Finland ultimately overcame the odds to remain an independent nation.

This experience is one of the only walking tours in Helsinki dedicated entirely to World War II history.

The tour explores the dramatic events that shaped Finland between 1939 and 1945 during the Winter War and the Continuation War.

We begin at the front entrance of the national museum of Finland, where your guide introduces the historical background of Finland’s struggle for survival. From there we walk past Parliament House before continuing through Töölö toward Hesperian Esplanadi and Runeberginkatu.

Along the route, guests will visit locations connected to Helsinki’s wartime history. Using historical photographs and museum-style artifacts from the period, your native English speaking guide will bring the story of wartime Finland to life and explain how civilians and soldiers experienced the conflict.

The tour continues through Väinämöinen Park before concluding at the historic military cemetery at Hietaniemi, where many Finnish soldiers who died during the war are buried.

In total, the walking distance for the tour is approximately 3 kilometers, covering several historical locations connected to Helsinki’s wartime past.
