A visit to Heidelberg Castle is one of the absolute highlights of any trip to Heidelberg. Our castle tour combines exciting history, impressive architecture, and an incomparable view of the old town and the Neckar Valley.
Even the ride up to the majestic castle on the historic mountain railway is an experience in itself. Once at the top, you will be greeted by the imposing ruins on the Königstuhl – a place full of stories, myths, and architectural masterpieces.
As you walk through the impressive gate tower, the castle courtyard opens up with its fascinating mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Here, over 600 years of history come to life: we take a look at the magnificent Friedrichsbau and the artistically decorated Ottheinrichsbau – and tell exciting stories about the electors, wars, and fires that have shaped the castle.
Another highlight: the Pharmacy Museum, which displays a unique collection of medical artifacts from past centuries.
From the Great Terrace, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views in Germany: over Heidelberg's old town, the Neckar River, and the green surrounding countryside. A perfect moment for photos—and for pausing to reflect.
Finally, we descend into the castle cellar and visit the world-famous largest wine barrel in the world. Here you can expect entertaining anecdotes about the use of the barrel—and, of course, the legendary question: Who drank it empty?
