What you can expect
As an inbound tour operator in China, we believe true travel is about feeling a city's pulse, not just ticking off sights. Today, we invite you on a half-day walking route we've carefully designed: From Gongchen Bridge to Xiaohe Street. It's not just a stroll along the Grand Canalāit's a key to authentic local life.
Led by a Hangzhou-born guide who knows every alley and story by heart, our tour starts at Gongchen Bridge. This Ming-dynasty three-arch bridge is the tallest and best-preserved ancient bridge on the canal. Here, history becomes tangibleāfeel the six-century-polished stones under your feet, trace the worn balustrades, watch cargo barges drift by. We suggest a 15-minute pauseānot for photos, but to simply watch: the boats, the water, the willows sketching Jiangnan in the breeze.
Cross the bridge into the Qiaoxi Historical Districtāour favorite stop, because it's alive. Unlike over-commercialized old towns, Qiaoxi keeps its original residents. Your guide will walk you through lanes so narrow two can barely pass. You'll see elders cooking at their doorsteps, clotheslines fluttering above (āHangzhou's colorful flagsā), and traditional white-walled homes blending with modern life.
A 15-minute canal-side walk brings you to Xiaohe Parkāa striking industrial remake of 1950s oil depots, with giant storage tanks, dock gear, and railway tracks preserved. It echoes Western āindustrial heritageā sites like London's Tate Modern or Germany's Zollvereināraw relics reborn in today's world.
Our journey ends at Xiaohe Street, a century-old canal-side lane with late-Qing riverside homes. Unlike Qiaoxi, its shops are artisanal and local: leather studios, pingtan teahouses, bookshops, family dinersāeach door hides a story. We urge at least 40 minutes here. Sit canal-side with Longjing tea or coffee, watch boats pass, and let time slow to a luxurious crawl.
