What you can expect

Drive up to the highest mountain peak on the Thai/Burma border, Doi Tung, 2,000 meters above sea-level. The name Doi Tung means ‘Flag Peak’. In the past, the forest area around Doi Tung was destroyed due to Opium implantation which was once common all over Doi Tung. Until 1987, Doi Tung Development Project was established according to the King’s Mother initiative, the opium cultivation has been virtually eliminated following the royal crop substitution project.

Visit Doi Tung Royal Villa and Mae Fah Luang Garden of the Doi Tung Development Project are under the patronage of the late Princess Mother. Experience Doi Tung Tree Top Walk to explore a 295-meter long walkway among the trees of the Mae Fah Luang Garden at 30 meters above the ground.

Drive further up to the temple Wat Phra Thad Doi Tung on the mountain peak, regarded as the holiest sanctuary by the residents of Chiang Rai and nearby provinces. The temple was built in A.D. 911 and it is believed that the left collarbone of Lord Buddha is enshrined in the twin pagodas. The legend says Phraya Achutarat (King of Chiang Saen) marked the spot where the twin pagoda was constructed and ordered a giant flag to be flown from the peak of the mountain, as evidence the big hole flag pole remains and can be seen in the temple area.
