Overview

Lebanon's mountains hide some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Middle East — and this small-group day trip from Beirut takes you to three of the best in a single action-packed day. Three completely different waterfalls, three completely different landscapes, and just enough hiking to make you feel like you earned every view.
Start at Afqa — a powerful waterfall plunging from a cave high in the cliffs of the Adonis Valley, one of Lebanon's most mythologically charged landscapes. Move on to Baatara Gorge — the famous three-bridge waterfall near Tannourine where a 255-metre cascade drops through three successive natural limestone bridges in a phenomenon found nowhere else on earth. Finish at Kfar Helda — a hidden gem of a waterfall reached by a short hike through the Lebanese mountain landscape, rewarding those who make the effort with one of the most photogenic natural scenes in the north of Lebanon.

Activity itinerary

Beirut (Pass by)

9:00 AM — Departure from Beirut Your knowledgeable English-speaking driver meets you at your Beirut hotel and heads north into the Lebanese mountains — the landscape climbing steeply as you leave the coast behind and head toward the Adonis Valley and the first waterfall of the day.

Afqa Waterfall

  • 1h
Arrive at one of Lebanon's most dramatic and most mythologically significant natural sites — the Afqa waterfall, which bursts from a cave high in the sheer limestone cliffs of the Adonis Valley and plunges down to form the source of the Adonis River below. In ancient times this was a sacred site dedicated to Adonis and Astarte — the Phoenician gods of love and fertility — and the cave from which the water flows was considered one of the entrances to the underworld. Today the waterfall is at its most powerful in spring when snowmelt swells the flow to a thundering cascade, the spray visible from far below. Walk to the base of the falls and feel the scale of the cliffs above you — one of those places in Lebanon that makes you understand why the Phoenicians thought the gods lived here.

Baatara Gorge Waterfall

  • 1h
  • Admission ticket not included
The centrepiece of the day — and one of the most extraordinary natural sights in the entire Middle East. The Baatara Gorge Waterfall near Tannourine is a geological phenomenon found nowhere else on earth: a 255-metre waterfall that plunges sequentially through three natural limestone bridges, carved over millions of years by the Balaa river into the Jurassic limestone of the Lebanese mountains. Standing at the viewpoint above the gorge and watching the water disappear through bridge after bridge into the darkness below is one of those rare travel moments that no photograph fully prepares you for. After taking in the view, a short hike down toward the gorge gets you closer to the falls — the sound of the water growing louder, the spray rising from below, the scale of the three bridges becoming more extraordinary the closer you get.

Kfar Helda

  • 1h
End the day at Kfar Helda — the least known and most rewarding of the three waterfalls, reached by a short hike through the northern Lebanese mountain landscape that most day-trippers never bother to make. The trail winds through cedar and pine forest before the waterfall reveals itself — a beautiful cascade dropping into a natural pool surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes you want to stay far longer than the itinerary allows. This is the waterfall that rewards the effort — quieter than Baatara, more intimate than Afqa, and the perfect final stop for a day spent chasing Lebanon's most spectacular flowing water.

Beirut (Pass by)

Return to Beirut — approx. 5:00–6:00 PM Scenic mountain drive back to Beirut with drop-off at your hotel — completing a full day chasing three of Lebanon's most spectacular waterfalls through the northern mountains.
