Discover the legendary Seven Lakes (Haft-Kul) of Tajikistan on a full-day journey from Samarkand, deep into the heart of the Fann Mountains. This chain of seven alpine lakes along the Shing River is famous for water that shifts color throughout the day — from deep sapphire to turquoise and emerald green — depending on how the sunlight hits the mountains around it.
Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Samarkand. We drive to the Uzbekistan–Tajikistan border, where our team guides you through the crossing step by step, so there's nothing to worry about. On the Tajik side, you'll meet your dedicated local guide and driver, who will be with you for the rest of the day.
Before heading into the mountains, we make a short stop at the lively morning bazaar in Panjakent, where you can see locals shopping for fresh bread, spices, and mountain honey — a genuine slice of everyday Tajik life. From there, the road follows the Shing River up into the Fann Mountains, passing each of the seven lakes in turn: Mijgon, Soya, Gushor, Nofin, Hurdak, Marguzor, and finally Hazorchashma, the highest of them all. Each lake has its own character, its own color, and its own local legend.
Along the way, we stop in a small mountain village, where locals often welcome travelers in for warm tandoor bread and tea straight from the oven — a simple but memorable moment of Tajik hospitality. Lunch is served lakeside: a traditional plov or qurutob, fresh bread, seasonal fruit, and tea, with a vegetarian option always available on request.
One of the highlights of the tour is a visit to our guide's favorite hidden viewpoint above Hazorchashma lake, a quiet spot most tour groups never find, where several lakes line up below you in a single breathtaking frame — perfect for photos.
This tour is kept as a small group, so you'll get real attention from your guide rather than being lost in a crowd. Our guides speak English and Russian and are happy to share the history, legends, and everyday life of the region as you travel together.
By early evening, we begin the journey back, crossing the border once more into Uzbekistan, where your Samarkand driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel — tired, but with a memory card full of seven different shades of blue and green.
