Hakalau Forest, named by Hawaiians for its “many perches,” is Hawaii’s most critical rainforest bird habitat. Our special-use permit allows us access to the Puakala tract, a place with one of the highest concentrations of endemic forest birds in the Hawaiian Islands, and not open to the general public. Whether you’re a casual or avid birdwatcher or just a lover of nature, this tour will leave you deeply enriched as you encounter some of the rarest birds and plants on earth.
Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge plays a crucial role in protecting Hawaii’s native birds through habitat restoration, invasive species control, and research and education initiatives. These efforts make it a vital component of bird conservation in the Hawaiian Islands.
Inside the Refuge, your guide will lead a 3-4 mile hike exploring the Puakala tract. Your birding guide will search for target species such as: Akepa, Akiapolaau, Amakihi, Apapane, Hawaii Creeper, Iiwi, Elepaio, Omao, Io, and Pueo.
Your day also includes a delicious, deli-style lunch which you can enjoy on the trail during your birding expedition. After a full day for exploring this beautiful nature reserve full of wildlife and forest, sit back and relax as you reflect on the your many memorable moments in Hakalau as your guide safely drives you back to your meeting location
For your convenience, we provide roundtrip transportation from our Hawaii Forest & Trail Kona HQ as well as at select convenient central meeting locations including: Four Seasons Hualalai Resort, Kona Village Resort, Queens MarketPlace in the Waikoloa/Kohala Resort area, and the Waikoloa Plaza in the Waikoloa Village area.
