What you can expect
Start your Guilin–Yangshuo adventure with a morning climb of Elephant Trunk Hill, the city’s iconic landmark at the confluence of the Li River and Peach Blossom River. Unlike typical tours that only stop for photos at the riverbank, this itinerary takes you up the hill itself, following stone paths past caves and viewpoints to the summit pagoda. From the top, you can look out over the Li River, Guilin’s skyline and surrounding karst peaks, gaining a much deeper sense of the city’s landscape than from ground level.
Late morning, transfer to the pier to board a 3-star Li River cruise for the classic full route from Guilin to Yangshuo. The 3-star boat offers a comfortable, good-value way to enjoy about four hours on the water, with indoor seating and open decks for unobstructed views. As you sail downstream, ever-changing karst peaks, rural villages and bamboo groves unfold like a traditional ink painting, giving you the famous “hundred-mile gallery” river scenery that has made Guilin and Yangshuo world-famous. A simple lunch is usually served on board so you can focus on the views.
Arriving in Yangshuo in the afternoon, you have time to explore West Street, the town’s most famous pedestrian lane lined with cafes, bars, boutique shops and local snack stalls. This is a relaxed window into Yangshuo’s blend of old-town alleys and backpacker vibe, where you can pick up souvenirs, try street food or simply enjoy people-watching against a backdrop of karst peaks. Your guide can recommend favorite corners or quieter side streets if you prefer a less crowded feel.
In the evening, your day continues with seats at the Dong King’s Night Banquet Bonfire Show in Tianlai Butterfly Spring, a large-scale outdoor song-and-dance performance that showcases the rich customs of the Dong and Miao ethnic groups. With colorful costumes, live music, folk songs and bonfire-style scenes, the show recreates traditional celebrations and village life, offering a lively contrast to the daytime river landscapes. It is a memorable way to round off your visit to Yangshuo before heading back.
After the show, you meet your driver for the return journey, arriving back at your Guilin hotel at night. This full-day tour combines an in-depth visit to Elephant Trunk Hill with the classic Li River cruise, time on West Street and an evening ethnic performance, giving you a well-paced overview of both Guilin’s scenery and Yangshuo’s culture in a single day without worrying about tickets or transport.
