Your day begins with a private pickup at your accomodation in El Calafate. We start the drive toward El Chaltén, traveling along the edge of Lago Argentino. During this stretch, you will have clear views of the lake and the vast Patagonian plains.
The Route to the Trailhead
Once we reach El Chaltén, we take a short break so you can see the town. From there, we leave the paved roads behind and drive 37km into the mountains. This section of the trip is on a gravel road that requires a skilled driver and a sturdy vehicle. Along the way, we make several strategic stops at key viewpoints:
Chorrillo del Salto: A 20-meter high waterfall located a short walk from the road.
Laguna Cóndor: A quiet lake where we often spot local birds and mountain reflections.
Laguna Toro: A viewpoint offering a wide perspective of the valley and the surrounding peaks.
The Trek and the Glacier
The drive ends near Lago del Desierto, where the hiking trail starts. The trek is 2 kilometers long and goes uphill. It is a steady climb through a native forest of Lengas and Ñires.
At the top, you reach the viewpoint for Glacier Huemul. A magestic hanging glacier that feeds its brigth turquoise glacial lagoon. You will have plenty of time to take photos and rest before we hike back down and begin the drive back to El Calafate.
