What you can expect

During this walking tour you will be accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide who knows the city’s hidden stories, traditions and lesser known corners. The experience begins at Cerciz Topulli Square, a lively and historic spot where you will receive an introduction to the tour and learn the first fascinating facts about Gjirokaster’s long and complex past. From there, we continue our walk toward the Old Bazaar, one of the most iconic areas of the city.

Our first main stop is the Neck of the Bazaar, a charming and picturesque part of the old market. Here the guide will explain the unique architectural style of the Bazaar, shaped by centuries of trade and tradition. This is also the perfect place to meet local artisans who still work using traditional methods. Wool products, stone carvings and wooden crafts fill the small shops and stands, all handmade and reflecting the cultural identity of Gjirokaster.

After exploring the Bazaar, the tour continues uphill toward the Castle. We will spend around one hour and a half inside this impressive fortress, which covers 2.5 hectares and dominates the city from above. The castle is rich in history, filled with stories of battles, tragedies, legends and rulers who left their mark. As you walk through its stone corridors, prisons, towers and open courtyards, the guide will reveal many details about the life that once unfolded within its walls. From the top, you will stand 330 meters above sea level and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire valley and the famous tower houses of Gjirokaster, characterized by their grey stone roofs and traditional architectural style.

Our final stop is the Zekate House, one of the best preserved examples of an Ottoman era tower house. This impressive residence was gifted by Ali Pasha Tepelena to his accountant Beqir Zeko, and today it stands as a museum that allows visitors to experience how wealthy families lived during that period. Its interior features beautifully decorated wooden ceilings, original furniture, and panoramic windows overlooking the city.

The aim of this tour is not only to visit the most popular landmarks but also to help you feel the unique, magical and welcoming atmosphere of Gjirokaster. By the end of the experience, you will have discovered a city where history, culture and everyday life blend in a truly unforgettable way.
