We start by riding along areas where workers once built ships and where big steel factories stood. Today, these neighbourhoods are changing into new, lively parts of the city surroundings with green spaces, walking paths, and modern buildings. You can really see the mix of old industry and new urbanisation projects. Your guide will make you relive the life lived by the workers in the past and how the city slowly became what it is today. The route stays simple for the whole tour: a straight, comfortable path beside the river, with no hills and no busy traffic, making it perfect for all levels.
One of the biggest highlights is crossing the famous Bizkaia Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the world’s oldest transporter bridge that is still working today. You ride across on a moving platform that carries you over the river, giving you wonderful views of the water, and the two villages Portugalete and Getxo that are connected by this bridge.
Once you reach the other side of the river, the scenery changes completely: welcome to Bilbao’s Golden Coast of Getxo. This is an elegant area where rich families and company owners once built their large houses and beautiful seaside villas. The streets are calm, full of trees, fresh air, and it’s a ride of 15 minutes with ocean view! Your guide leads you towards the old fishermen’s harbour of Algorta, a picturesque neighbourhood of whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, stunning views, and lively bars and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to end the guided part of the tour.
Although the tour ends, your adventure continues! — the bike is yours for the rest of the day, included in the price. Stay by the sea, visit the beach, explore cafés and viewpoints, or simply enjoy riding along the coastline at your own pace. Your guide will give you tips to do and explain the simple return route: just follow the straight riverside bikepath back to Bilbao before the shop closes.
