Reforma Avenue was conceived as a symbol of progress and modernity, and in its early years was surrounded by neoclassical mansions and buildings that reflected the elegance of the Guatemalan elite. Today it is a corporate and commercial corridor, with hotels, offices and restaurants, but retains its historic character thanks to monuments and green areas. It is also a civic space, scene of parades, homeland celebrations and cultural activities.

It was built between 1927 and 1941 at the initiative of Felipe Yurrita, a Spanish immigrant. The work was an offering to the Virgin of Anguish, patron saint of her hometown in Spain, in gratitude for having protected her family during the eruption of the Santa Maria volcano in 1902.

The Civic Center of Guatemala is one of the most important and representative architectural complexes of Guatemala City, both for its historical value and for its administrative and cultural function. It is considered Cultural Heritage of the Nation, for its historical and artistic relevance.

Inside the cathedral you can see the paintings of Pedro Ramírez, colonial images, the replica of the Black Christ of Esquipulas, the Virgin of Socorro and the High Altar.

The design of this city is based on the concept of classic urban planning where city planning is done based on the needs of the inhabitants.
