What you can expect
From the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, a journey northward brings you to two of the island’s most revered historical and spiritual landmarks—Anuradhapura and Mihintale. As you travel through the dry zone’s open landscapes, dotted with paddy fields and ancient tanks, the sense of history deepens with every mile. Reaching Anuradhapura, you enter one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the powerful capital of Sri Lanka for over a thousand years, Anuradhapura is a vast archaeological marvel. Its sacred grounds are home to monumental dagobas like the Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, grand relics of a time when Buddhism flourished under royal patronage. At the heart of the city lies the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, believed to be the oldest historically documented tree in the world, grown from a sapling of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Pilgrims, monks, and visitors alike gather here in quiet reverence, lighting oil lamps and offering flowers in an atmosphere of deep devotion.
A short distance east of Anuradhapura is Mihintale, a serene and spiritual sanctuary nestled on a forested hill. Revered as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Mihintale is where Arahat Mahinda, the emissary of Indian Emperor Ashoka, met King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BCE, marking the beginning of Sri Lanka’s long Buddhist heritage. Today, the site is a peaceful haven featuring ancient stone staircases that lead to impressive ruins, meditation caves, and religious shrines. The climb to the summit is rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding plains and the iconic Mihintale stupa gleaming in the sunlight. Exploring Anuradhapura and Mihintale offers not just a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s ancient civilization, but also a profound connection to its spiritual soul—an experience of timeless beauty, history, and peace.
