What you can expect
Prepare for an unforgettable exploration of the Northern Black Hills, where breathtaking landscapes and fascinating stories await at every turn. Our journey begins as we set off from Rapid City, circling the northern tip of the Black Hills toward the iconic Devils Tower—known to the Lakota as Mato Tipila, or Bear’s Lodge. This sacred site has been revered for thousands of years, and you'll feel its power as we approach.
Along the way, the scenery shifts dramatically from towering pine-covered peaks to rolling prairies and fertile valleys. We’ll make a stop in Belle Fourche—French for “Beautiful Fork”—the geographical center of the United States. Snap a photo at the Tri-State Museum and Visitor Center while taking in the town’s historic charm.
As we continue, you’ll hear tales of ancient buffalo jumps, where Indigenous people once hunted with skill and ingenuity. Crossing into Wyoming, the landscape transforms yet again as we meander along creeks that have sculpted vibrant red and yellow canyons over millions of years. Suddenly, Devils Tower rises before us, its imposing silhouette seemingly out of this world.
Once at the base, we’ll explore the 1.3-mile trail encircling this natural wonder. You’ll learn about its cultural significance, marvel at the sacred prayer cloths adorning the trees, and hear the remarkable story of the first settlers who scaled its heights. Movie buffs will also enjoy a nod to “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” After immersing ourselves in the history and majesty of Bear’s Lodge, we’ll browse the gift shop for unique keepsakes before continuing our adventure.
Next, we head to the charming town of Spearfish for a delicious lunch (included in your tour) before entering the crown jewel of the Northern Black Hills: Spearfish Canyon. This scenic byway is a wonderland of towering limestone cliffs, lush forests, and crystal-clear streams. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like deer, Bighorn Sheep, or even the elusive Mountain Goat.
We’ll visit three stunning waterfalls—Bridal Veil Falls, Roughlock Falls, and Spearfish Falls—each accessible by road or short, picturesque trails. These natural masterpieces, framed by the canyon’s towering walls, are perfect spots for photos and peaceful reflection.
As the day winds down, we make our way back, perhaps catching a magnificent sunset over the Black Hills. Along the drive, we’ll answer any lingering questions while you relax, reliving the memories of this incredible adventure. From start to finish, this journey is about more than sightseeing—it’s about connecting with the stories, landscapes, and magic of the Black Hills.
