Travel far beyond city lights on an unforgettable evening journey along the historic Ofoten Railway. This experience will take you deep into the quiet northern wilderness in search of the Northern Lights, one of nature’s most impressive light displays.
As the train moves through the dark mountain landscape, the lack of light pollution gives us excellent conditions for spotting the northern lights. Our destination is Katterat, a remote mountain station located 373 meters above sea level. With no road access, it is one of the darkest places in the region, ideal for aurora viewing.
At Katterat station, we step off the train and gather around a warm campfire under the open sky, while a traditional lavvu nearby offers shelter and extra warmth. Your host will serve hot drinks and a light snack, allowing you to relax and enjoy the moment while waiting for the northern lights to appear.
During the stop, your host will also share stories about the important history of the railway, the surrounding landscape, and everyday life in the Arctic, adding cultural insight to this special experience. Whether the aurora lights up the sky or you simply enjoy the silence of the wilderness, the atmosphere at Katterat is truly memorable.
After the stop, we return to the train for the journey back to Narvik, bringing with us lasting memories of a magical Arctic night.
