What you can expect
Discover the ancient cave town of Uplistsikhe and the city of Gori on a day trip from Kutaisi. Explore the cave town, see the Stalin Museum (or Ethnographic Museum), and have a walk in Gori, finding historical and modern sights.
Start your day at “Megobari Tours Meeting point” near the Colchis Fountain in central Kutaisi, where our guide will meet you and together you will start a trip to Shida-Kartli region. After approx 1.5 hours drive, stop in Surami for a coffee and sweet bread called “Nazuki.” Continue to Uplistsikhe, one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus region. Some of the oldest structures of Uplistiskhe date back to the early Bronze Age.
Located near Gori on the left bank of the River Mtkvari, the site amazes visitors with its rich history and the beauty of the landscape. Walk on the ancient road of the cave town and explore numerous halls, rooms, and ancient wine cellar. Archaeological findings such as ritual artifacts and jewels made of gold, silver, Iron, bones, stone, and clay sculptures shed light on the history of the town.
Before continuing to visit Gori, you will stop for lunch.
Continue to Gori, the town mostly known for being the birthplace of the Soviet Dictator Stalin. During the Gori walking tour with our guide, you will discover the city's rich history that extends far beyond being the birthplace of the infamous citizen. You will visit the viewpoint of the Gori Fortress, one of Georgia’s main citadels, dating back to the 13th century, with evidence of human habitation stretching back as far as the first millennium BCE. You will walk in Gori streets stopping at City Hall building, from the 1950s and other sights related to the painful recent history of the city, together with some modern installations.
You will visit the Stalin Museum (or Gori Ethnographic Museum independently).
After walk you will take car and go back to Kutaisi.
Expected tour duration is 10 hours, exact tour duration depends on road traffic.
