What you can expect

Hello dear visitor, my name is Arnaud and will be your native Guide of this magnificent Provence. Among the 5 tours I offer, I take you today to the Roman monuments of Pont du Gard, Nimes and Orange.

The tour will start by a pickup in front of Hôtel Bristol, in Avignon. Then, we will go to Nîmes for a quick stop in front of the Maison Carrée, an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the Emperor Augustus's grandsons. Take a lot of pictures of this beautiful monument whose construction last 6 years and ended in year 4 AD. After this, we will go to the Nîmes Arena, the other main Roman monument in town. You will enjoy an audio-guided tour there (only from April to October). The Arena was built at the end of the 1st century AD, especially for gladiator fights. Now, concerts, sporting events and bullfights occur in this amphitheater.
NB: from November to March, only a walk in the old town of Nîmes will be made, to see the main monuments (Maison Carrée, Arena, Fountain's Gardens…).

We will then stop at the Pont du Gard, a bridge which was part of a 52 km aqueduct built between around 30 to 50 AD, whose goal was to bring water from Uzès to Nîmes, because Nîmes was a very important city in the Roman Empire and it needed water for baths, gardens and fountains. We will stop there first for a picnic with local produce from local farms such as eggs, black olives tapenade, sweet pepper tapenade, fresh goat cheese, seasonal fruits, fruits juice (from April to October only), then to stroll around the Pont du Gard for great views of this monument from the riverside or from the bridge itself. If you are ready to climb quickly the 100 stairs to the top, we can also enjoy a very nice viewpoint on the Pont du Gard.

Finally, we will head to Orange for a stop at the Roman Arc de Triomphe, completed in around 20 AD in honour of the 2nd Gallic Legion who built Orange, and was also used as a gate to enter the town in the Roman Empire but also during the Principality of Orange in the Middle Ages. To finish, we will go to the majestic Ancient Theater for an audio-guided tour. First monument built in Orange in around 20 BC, operas and theatre plays occured in this magnificent place. Later, it became a district with a lot of houses built in its facade and even inside the monument. After a big restoration in the 1800s, a very famous opera and classical music festival (Les Chorégies d'Orange) is organized in the theatre since 1869.

The tour will end in front of Hôtel Bristol, in Avignon, where you will be dropped off.

NB: from November to March, the tour will be done in reverse (Orange, Pont du Gard, Nîmes), and without meals.
