Enjoy an authentic experience with real families from the floating islands of Uros, direct descendants of the ancient settlers of Lake Titicaca. This tour will allow you to learn about their way of life, their customs, and their ancestral language up close, on a journey rich in history and cultural connection.
The adventure begins with pickup from your hotel and a boat trip to the Uros Islands. During the journey, your guide will share information about the lake, its species, its legends, and the meaning of the name Titicaca, setting the stage for you to discover one of the most iconic places in the Peruvian highlands.
Upon arriving at the first island, you will be welcomed with a greeting in the Aymara language by the president or a local representative. Here, you will learn how the islands are built using a life-size totora model, as the islanders explain – in their native language – every detail of the process; the guide will translate into Spanish and English so that everyone can understand.
Afterward, the families invite visitors into their homes to spend some time with them and to dress in traditional Uros attire for photos, offering a unique cultural experience.
Afterwards, there is a period dedicated to local handicrafts and souvenirs, during which visitors can directly support the families by purchasing handmade products.
At the end of the visit, visitors are offered the option of taking a horseback ride or a trip on a totora catamaran, a traditional boat made entirely from the plant that gives life to the islands. This ride is optional and takes you to the second island, although those who prefer can continue on the main motorboat.
On the second island, you will find a different atmosphere, with local cafes, shops, and restaurants where you can enjoy fresh trout ceviche or fried trout, typical dishes from the lake. Here, you can see the contrast between traditional family life and the more tourist-oriented part of the community.
Guests have the completely optional choice to continue on to a third island, known as the Totora Museum (not included in the package price). This site was created by two elders from the community, who crafted bird sculptures and a replica of the first Uros raft, a symbol of the history of this floating village.
Finally, guests return by boat to the main port, and from there, they can return to their hotel or to downtown Puno.
