We begin with a gentle 30-minute uphill walk. As we gain elevation, the views become more impressive with every step. Soon, Chania, Souda Bay, and the harbor with its ships unfold beneath us. Being so close to the city, everything below seems almost like a miniature world.
Once we reach the top, the most magical part of the walk begins. The sun slowly starts to set, bathing the landscape in warm golden light. From here, the route is mostly downhill. At a relaxed pace, we follow natural trails while enjoying uninterrupted views of Chania, the coastline, and the sunset.
Along the way, we pass two small chapels where we stop for short breaks and take in the peaceful atmosphere. As we walk through the authentic Cretan countryside, we are often accompanied by free-roaming goats, ancient olive trees, and the untouched beauty of the island. This is what makes the walk so special: it is not only about the sunset, but also about experiencing the real Crete.
The first section requires a little effort as we walk uphill, but the remainder of the route is much easier. The final one and a half hours are mostly downhill and suitable for almost everyone. We adapt to the pace of the group, take as many breaks as needed, and never rush. The goal is not to reach the finish quickly, but to enjoy the scenery, the atmosphere, and the sunset together.
As the sun slowly disappears beyond the horizon and the lights of Chania begin to sparkle below, you will experience one of those unforgettable Cretan evenings that stay with you long after the walk has ended.
