Description

Kyoto has been Japan's cultural capital for more than 1,000 years, and on this walking tour of the city you’ll discover exactly why. Join a local guide and see some of Kyoto’s top cultural and historical sights. Gaze at the red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine, soak up the stillness of Tofukuji Temple’s Zen gardens and explore Gion, famously known as Kyoto’s Geisha district.

You’ll start at one of the city’s must-see sights, the Tofukuji Temple, which was built in the 13th century and is famous for its beautiful Zen garden. Stroll the grounds or find a shaded, serene spot and imagine what life would have been like there all the way back in 1236. Learn about the origin and inspiration for the Zen garden, and what it means to the Monks who continue to live and study here.

Next head to Fushimi Inari Shrine, nestled at the base of a tree-covered mountainside. Count the numerous stone fox statues that dot this lush property (considered to be the messengers of the Gods) and pass through the winding red torii gates that stretch for miles into the mountains.

As the sun goes down, head for the twinkling lights of Gion, Kyoto’s gathering spot for geishas. This historic district features restaurants, teahouses and theatres – all combining traditional Japanese architecture with an ancient means of entertainment. Keep an eye out for a flash of white makeup or an elaborate updo – giveaway clues that you’ve spotted a geisha.

The only negative was possibly a better meeting spot like a hotel with exact spot and street other than that the tour was amazing and our guide was very knowledgeable and kept us together at a great pace.

We had a lot of fun and learned a lot about the culture. I think the hightlight of our tour was when we went to the Gion District and saw quite a few geishas. Our Tour guide Ko was very knowledgeable and friendly.
