Description

Learn about traditional Japanese cuisine on our 3 hour Kyoto Food Tour. We’ll challenge our senses with washoku, ‘food of Japan’, and immerse ourselves in Japanese culture. We’ll start at Nishiki Market, where we may sample pickled vegetables, or Japanese tea sweets. We’ll learn about shun (ingredients that have reached their seasonal peak) and umami (savoriness) and talk about how these concepts differentiate Japanese cuisine from its neighboring countries and cuisines.

My tour was led by Judith. I ended up being the only participant, so it was extra special! She provided a very interesting tour of the market, encouraging me to try new things, explaining the different purposes of foods and various sellers. We also visited a couple shrines. We toured the nearby neighborhood on our way to a wonderful lunch, where I got to try some Kyoto cuisine. Highly recommended!
