Hiking Route through La Madera – From El Carmen de Viboral to La Unión

Discover the authentic rural side of Colombia on a scenic hiking experience through La Madera, one of the most beautiful trails in the Eastern Antioquia mountains. This medium-level hike combines nature, culture, local traditions, and delicious food in one unforgettable day.

We begin our journey at the Main Park of El Carmen de Viboral, a charming town famous for its long-standing ceramic tradition. From there, we start walking along peaceful rural roads for about 3.5 km, surrounded by green hills, wildflowers, and the calm atmosphere of the countryside.

Before starting the ascent, we’ll stop to visit a family-run flowerpot factory that has been operating for over 40 years. Here you’ll witness the traditional ceramic-making process — an essential part of the town’s cultural heritage, passed down through generations.

The trail then gently climbs up the mountain until we reach the summit, where a spectacular panoramic view of the San Nicolás Valley awaits. We’ll take a well-deserved break to enjoy a handmade snack or refreshment while admiring the majestic green landscape of Eastern Antioquia.

From there, we begin our descent toward La Unión, a rural area known for its potato and dairy production. We’ll walk through farmland and pastures, crossing muddy country paths that are part of the region’s authentic farming life. Along the way, you’ll hear the soothing sound of crystal-clear streams and feel a deep connection with nature.

The hike ends in a rural area of La Unión, where a local tuc tuc (small motor taxi) will pick us up and take us to the town’s main square. There, we’ll enjoy a traditional Antioquian lunch made with fresh local ingredients and have some free time to explore the town and its peaceful atmosphere.

Finally, we’ll take transportation back to El Carmen de Viboral, closing a day filled with breathtaking landscapes, local culture, and the warmth of the Colombian countryside.
