What you can expect
The Eifel is one of the most fascinating landscapes in Europe, and in the heart of the Volcanic Eifel lies the historic Birgel Watermill. This special place, lovingly run by head miller Erwin and his team, combines traditional craftsmanship, history and hospitality in an idyllic setting. Four restored, fully functional mills await you on the grounds of the mill: a flour mill from the 13th century, a mustard mill, an oil mill and a sawmill. These mills are lovingly maintained and explained on guided tours.
During the guided tour, you will learn how grain used to be processed into flour, how mustard and oil were produced in the respective mills and the importance of water power for the operation of the mills. Particularly impressive is the flour mill, which was modernized in 1917 with a hydroelectric turbine, making it the largest mill in the Daun district. The mill bakery on the premises is also a real highlight. Here, sourdough bread is baked in a stone oven according to grandma's recipe - a tradition that is still upheld today.
Another highlight is the schnapps distillery, a long-cherished dream of head miller Erwin. Here you can learn about the distillation process during a schnapps distillation course and taste the schnapps produced here. After the guided tour, you can stop off at the cozy restaurant on the mill grounds and enjoy regional specialties such as freshly baked bread, mustard or home-brewed beer - an ideal end to an exciting day. Meals in the restaurant are on a self-pay basis.
The mill also offers numerous experiences and programs that can be tailored to different occasions such as family celebrations, company parties, children's birthdays, weddings or conferences. The Historic Birgel Watermill is a living place where the traditions of times gone by are preserved and presented in a unique way.
