What you can expect
Begin your tour at Ponte Giardini, a small stone bridge that marks the perfect entrance into the historic center. From here, your guide introduces you to the story of Dolceacqua, a village shaped by centuries of history, wine traditions, and strategic importance along the valley.
The first stop is the curious Fontana del Rossese, a symbolic monument dedicated to the region’s most famous wine, Rossese DOC. Shaped like a wine barrel, the fountain contains a red-colored liquid representing the identity of the territory. Here, hear stories about local winemaking traditions and how this small village became known for one of Liguria’s most appreciated wines.
The walk continues to the Church of Saint Antonio Abate, a 15th-century parish church that preserves centuries of artistic and religious heritage. Outside, admire the ancient bell tower, originally part of the village defensive walls. Inside, discover the remarkable polyptych by Ludovico Brea, a master of Ligurian Renaissance painting, whose works connect Dolceacqua to the broader artistic history of Northern Italy.
From here, the experience leads you to the highlight of the village: the iconic Ponte Vecchio of Dolceacqua. This elegant medieval stone bridge, with its single sweeping arch, connects the two sides of the Nervia River and creates one of the most photographed views in Liguria. Walking across it, marvel at the colorful houses climbing the hillside and the breathtaking scenery that inspired Claude Monet, who painted the bridge and titled it “Le Château de Dolceacqua”.
As you continue through narrow cobbled alleys, known locally as carruggi, pass noble houses with stone portals, hidden courtyards, and charming squares that reveal the authentic soul of the village. Every corner tells a story of medieval life, local traditions, and centuries-old architecture preserved almost untouched.
The route then reaches the exterior of the imposing Doria Castle, perched on the hill above the village. This medieval fortress, with its massive stone walls and defensive towers, once controlled the entire Nervia Valley. From below, admire its powerful silhouette and listen to stories of battles, noble families, and strategic importance during the medieval period. Monet himself was fascinated by this castle, capturing it in one of his most famous works.
The tour concludes back in the heart of the historic center, where time seems to slow down. Surrounded by stone houses, flower-filled balconies, and panoramic viewpoints over the valley, experience the peaceful atmosphere that makes Dolceacqua one of the most authentic villages in Liguria.
