Johannes Vermeer is one of the most famous Dutch painters of the seventeenth century. His best-known paintings include Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Milkmaid, The Little Street, and View of Delft. Although we know a great deal about Vermeer’s work, relatively little is known about his life. What does seem clear, however, is that Johannes Vermeer was very fond of Delft. He was born there, appears to have lived and worked there his entire life, started a family there, and also died there. Johannes was therefore a true citizen of Delft. Did he sell many paintings during his lifetime? And what caused him to leave behind a relatively small oeuvre?
The walking tour starts at the Beestenmarkt. We gather at the statue of the bull in the middle of the square. The city walk ends at the Oude Kerk. The tour follows the life story of Johannes Vermeer and the events in the city during his time. It is a short walk (approximately 1,2 km) that takes about 1.5 hours.
