Hancheng Dangjia Village, nestled in Shaanxi Province, is a remarkably preserved ancient settlement from the Ming and Qing dynasties, acclaimed as a “living fossil of traditional Oriental dwellings.” Established in the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) and thriving through the 14th–19th centuries, the village boasts over 120 courtyard houses (siheyuan), ancestral halls, and the iconic Wenxing Pavilion. Its architecture features gray-brick walls, intricately carved wooden beams, and symbolic tilework, all harmonized with feng shui principles. Recognized as a National Key Cultural Heritage Site(2001) and added to China’s World Heritage Tentative List (2016), Dangjia Village offers a window into rural Chinese life. Visitors today wander cobblestone paths, explore ancestral residences, and admire the blend of practicality and artistry in its 700-year-old structures.
