A Lifestyle Built on Water.
Life in Chong Kneas revolves entirely around the lake's ebb and flow. Unlike stilted villages, many of the structures here are truly floating, constructed on rafts of bamboo and barrels. As the water levels rise and fall dramatically between the dry and monsoon seasons, the entire village physically relocates to stay afloat. This “floating” infrastructure is quite comprehensive.
• Daily Life: Houses, a market, a general store, a Catholic church, a Buddhist temple, and even a floating basketball court and a floating soccer court.
• Education & Services: There are floating schools and even a mobile phone tower powered by solar energy.
• Livelihood: Most residents are ethnic Khmer and Vietnamese who rely on fishing, fish farming, and tourism. You'll see floating fish and crocodile farms,
• Background: Some of the Vietnamese residents live on the lake because they are unable to legally own land on the shore.
