What you can expect

  • A unique experience in the heart of the Chinon region

In Panzoult, a wine-growing village nestled in the heart of Touraine, the Cave de la Sibylle invites you to enjoy an extraordinary sensory and cultural adventure. A former tuffeau quarry – the iconic white stone used to build the region's castles and churches – the cellar has been transformed into an unusual tourist attraction by 15 families of passionate winegrowers, who have been working together as an association since 2002.

    A 70-meter scenographic tour

As you walk through the 70 meters of underground corridors, you will discover 17 cellars carved into the rock by three artists from Touraine. Each cellar pays tribute to one of Panzoult's wineries, but also to the local heritage: scenes from Rabelais's Third Book, the fauna, flora and history of the village come to life on the tuffeau walls.

At the back of the cave, pass through the large red velvet curtains and let yourself be carried away by a show of interplay between shadows, lights and animated shapes, accompanied by captivating music. A dreamlike atmosphere, inspired by Panurge's dreams, which transports visitors to a world of its own.

The tour ends with a short black-and-white animated film, “From the Vine to the Bottle,” which recounts the main stages of the winemaker's craft throughout the seasons – a poetic interlude before returning to reality.

After the tour, head to La Maison des Vins for a guided tasting of the vintages produced by the winemakers of Panzoult (for over 18s only). Red, rosé or white: discover the three expressions of the Chinon AOC appellation – Cabernet Franc with aromas of red fruits and spices, fruity and delicate rosé, and Chenin Blanc with mineral and floral notes. A convivial moment to gain a better understanding of the terroir and winemaking methods, with some estates committed to organic or sustainable farming.

    Practical information
The cellar is cool (54°F year-round) – bring a sweater. The tour lasts about 1 hour (30 minutes of self-guided tour + 30 minutes of guided wine tasting). The site is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.
