What you can expect

  • Casa e putìa is an event where you can visit a traditional tailoring shop like those of yesteryear inside stately buildings – a classic sewing room where women seek to make their dreams come true and, in addition to feeling physically beautiful, try to feel good psychologically, because wearing a garment that makes you feel good about yourself inevitably makes you feel good around others.
The experience begins with tea and biscuits, during which we get to know each other, and then we move into the sewing room to see how a pattern is prepared on a piece of fabric. The Sicilian shawl is an icon of traditional dress. Used for various purposes beyond simply providing warmth, it can be considered an indelible part of a culture that still persists in our customs today. From a humble item used for covering or for work around the house or in the fields to becoming an elegant garment, the transition is very short: all it takes is changing the fabrics or embellishing it with embroidery and lace.
The simple shawl, with its triangular and almost votive shape that recalls the divine triad of Catholicism, is for a woman an item that lends itself to many uses, a tool that has its own precise language made up of silent words and punctuation.
Sewing one is therefore not only a learning exercise, but also an act of gaining knowledge of an element that belongs to an ancient culture to be preserved and passed on, even to those who are not from the area.
With Madonie Travel Service, you will learn how to sew your own Sicilian shawl under the guidance of an expert local designer.
