After pickup from your hotel, journey through the heart of Capitol Reef and experience more than 200 million years of geologic history.
The Cathedral Valley Loop begins with an exciting crossing of the Fremont River, followed by dramatic canyon overlooks and your first views of Jurassic-era bentonite formations. Visit a historic desert water well and an abandoned 1940s drilling rig before continuing to the otherworldly Bentonite Hills. Their vivid colors and surreal clay formations make this remote landscape a favorite among photographers and drone enthusiasts. Because this area is outside the National Park boundaries, drones are permitted where allowed.
Your adventure continues to the Lower South Desert Overlook, where panoramic views reveal massive sandstone monoliths, including Jail House Rock, surrounded by fascinating goblin-like formations.
Guests may also choose an optional short hike for a unique bird's-eye view of the Temples of the Sun and Moon. Next, visit the Upper South Desert Overlook, offering spectacular views of ancient igneous intrusions and, for those comfortable with heights, a dramatic 360-degree panorama of the surrounding desert.
Halfway through the tour, there is access to a park restroom. A 30-minute picnic lunch with a custom sandwich and soft drink can also be arranged for an additional fee.
Descend a series of impressive switchbacks into Cathedral Valley, enjoying views of the towering Walls of Jericho along the way. Then arrive at the tour's highlight: the iconic Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon. This extended stop includes time to explore and photograph these magnificent monoliths, as well as nearby Glass Mountain, a remarkable formation covered in sparkling crystals. Depending on your departure time, you may see the formations illuminated in their most spectacular light.
For an additional fee, adventurous guests can take a 45-minute one-way hike to a secluded viewpoint featuring an extraordinary panorama of the Temples of the Sun, Moon, and Stars.
The final portion of the tour showcases even more colorful bentonite formations and the ridges of Mancos Shale—layers that tell the ancient story of Utah's prehistoric oceans. After returning to the highway, relax during the approximately 30-minute drive back to your hotel.
