What you can expect
The Otaru Canal is one of the most famous landmarks in Hokkaido. Completed in 1923, this historic waterway played a vital role in the development of Hokkaido by enabling small boats to transfer cargo directly from large ships to seaside warehouses. Today, the beautifully preserved stone warehouses have been converted into restaurants, breweries, and museums, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. For instance, 63 traditional gas lamps line the canal.
The Yoichi Distillery (Nikka Whisky) is located in Yoichi, Hokkaido, and is a holy site for Japanese whisky lovers. Even if you don't drink much whisky, the distillery is well worth a visit for its beautiful, historic grounds, which feel as though a part of the Scottish Highlands has been transported to northern Japan. Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the distillery's striking stone walls, bright red roofs, and historic brick buildings are designated National Important Cultural Properties. There is also a museum showcasing the brand and the history of whisky production in Japan. You can sample whisky at the tasting bar and purchase factory-exclusive varieties.
Located on the north-west coast of the Shakotan Peninsula in western Hokkaido, Japan, Cape Kamui is widely regarded as one of the country's most beautiful coastal attractions.
The cape is famous for the incredible clarity of its waters. The colour is so unique that it is officially known across Japan as 'Shakotan Blue'. To reach the very tip of the cape, follow the Charenka Path, a nature trail. The walk takes 20–30 minutes each way and offers stunning views of the cliffs and ocean.
Shimamui Coast
This is the only place where you can reach the water's edge surrounded by towering cliffs. Because of its crystal-clear waters and beautiful rocky shores, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving. You can also enjoy strolling along the coastline and take in the magnificent views of the sea and mountains.
The Ogon Cape (Golden Cape)
Here you can expect to have a 360-degree view of the sea and the bustling Bikuni Harbor. It owes its name to both the historic abundance of herring that once made the waters shimmer like gold, and the spectacular modern-day sunsets that bathe the coastline in a warm, glittering light.
