Step into one of Indonesia’s most authentic and spiritually rich traditional communities with our immersive journey to the Ammatoa Kajang Indigenous Village in Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi. This cultural experience offers a rare opportunity to witness a way of life that has remained unchanged for generations, rooted in simplicity, honesty, and deep respect for nature.
The Ammatoa Kajang community is led by the Ammatoa, the highest customary leader chosen for life and regarded as a spiritual father and guardian of ancestral law. The people of Kajang live according to “Pasang ri Kajang,” sacred ancestral messages that guide them to embrace simplicity (talasa kamase-mase), fairness, and harmony with the environment. Their philosophy is not only spoken but practiced in everyday life.
Located in Tana Toa Village, the community protects more than 313 hectares of sacred customary forest passed down from their ancestors. This forest is strictly preserved under traditional law (Pikukuh), making Ammatoa Kajang one of the finest examples of indigenous-based conservation in Indonesia. Cutting trees without permission, polluting rivers, or harming wildlife is strictly forbidden and subject to customary sanctions.
One of the most striking features of the community is their traditional attire. Black handwoven clothing dominates daily life, symbolizing equality, humility, and strength. Men wear a black woven outfit with a head covering called “pasapo.” Visitors entering the inner customary area, known as Ilalang Embayya (Kajang Dalam), are required to wear black clothing as a sign of respect.
Modernization is intentionally limited within the core area. Electricity, vehicles, and modern technology are not allowed. Upon entering the sacred inner village, all visitors must remove footwear and walk barefoot. This rule reflects humility and equality before nature and ancestral law. Photography is also restricted in certain sacred areas and must follow local guidance.
The journey from Makassar to Kajang takes approximately six hours by car, passing through scenic South Sulawesi landscapes. Upon arrival, we will enter the traditional village accompanied by a local guide to ensure all customs and regulations are respected. You will spend one night either in a local resident’s house for a truly authentic experience or at accommodation around Bulukumba, depending on availability and preference.
