What you can expect

  • Meet your guide at the Tourist Office and begin exploring one of the best-preserved historic centers in the Puster Valley. From the very first steps, discover how this thriving medieval town developed as an important crossroads between north and south, shaping its unique identity.

Your walk starts at the Church of the Saviour at the Ursuline Convent, an elegant Gothic church built against the ancient city walls. Admire its pointed bell tower, once incorporated into Brunico's defensive system, and uncover the stories hidden within its architecture.

Continue to the Ursuline Gate (Ursulinentor), one of the original entrances to the medieval town, where you'll see a historic fresco by local artist Johannes of Brunico. As you stroll along the charming Via Centrale (Stadtgasse), Brunico's historic main street, admire colorful facades, ornate wrought-iron balconies, arcaded houses, and distinctive gabled rooftops that create one of South Tyrol's most picturesque streetscapes.

Along the way, stop at St. Florian Gate, decorated with artwork by renowned South Tyrolean painter Rudolf Stolz, before reaching the Rienza Gate, where centuries-old frescoes still preserve the memory of Brunico's defensive and cultural past.

Cross the Rienza River to visit the Church of the Holy Spirit (Spitalkirche zum Heiligen Geist), a beautiful Baroque church built on the site of the town's medieval hospital. Inside, admire Francesco Unterberger's striking depiction of the Baptism of Christ together with elegant Baroque altars and decorations that reflect Brunico's rich artistic heritage.

Your journey continues through Ragen Gate (Ragentor), another historic entrance to the old town, featuring a fresco of Bishop Bruno, the city's founder. From here, follow the ancient path uphill to Brunico Castle, the perfect finale to your experience.

Perched above the town, the castle dominates the surrounding landscape with its impressive walls, towers, and medieval keep. From its panoramic position, enjoy spectacular views over Brunico, the Puster Valley, and the surrounding Alpine peaks while your guide reveals the strategic importance of this fortress throughout the centuries.
