What you can expect
Context
Lake Paranoá was not there before Brasília was. The river was dammed in the late 1950s as part of Lúcio Costa's plan for the new capital, and the water became the mirror the city was designed to be seen in. From the shore you see a lake. From the middle of it, at the end of the day, you see Brasília the way its architects imagined it: a low, clean horizon under the wide open sky of the Cerrado.
Meeting your boat
You meet at Pontão do Lago Sul, the lakeside promenade on the south shore, and board a vessel registered with the Brazilian Merchant Navy with a licensed crew. Departure is at 5pm, every day of the year.
On the water
The boat leaves the pier and heads out across calm water. Within minutes the city rearranges itself around you. The JK Bridge lifts its three arches over the lake, the Alvorada Palace sits low on the far bank, and the Esplanade skyline draws its flat line against the sky. Your boatman knows exactly where the sun will drop and shapes the route around it, holding the boat in position for the last minutes of light. This is why the trip runs longer in December than in June: the sun sets almost an hour later, and you stay out for it.
There is nothing to do but look. No walking, no effort, no schedule to keep. Commentary on board is in Portuguese, though the boat is a place for watching rather than listening, and the views need no translation.
What is included
Your boat ticket, the full sunset navigation on Lake Paranoá, a licensed crew and a registered vessel, and adventure insurance cover provided by the local operator. The trip is shared with other passengers and runs in light conditions suitable for all ages.
Before you book
Arrive at Pontão do Lago Sul by 4:40pm. The boat departs at 5pm and waits five minutes only. Bring a light layer for after sundown, sun protection, water and a camera. In heavy rain or unsafe conditions the trip may be postponed or cancelled, and you can choose a full refund or a credit for another date.
