Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Thimphu (2,334m)
Arrive at Paro International Airport and meet your guide. Visit the National Museum (Ta Dzong), a 17th-century watchtower showcasing Bhutan’s history and cultural heritage. Drive 1.5 hours (55km) to Thimphu, the world’s only capital without traffic lights. Visit the National Memorial Chorten, a revered site where locals gather for daily prayers, and the impressive 169ft Buddha Dordenma Statue overlooking the valley.
Day 2: Tango Monastery – Punakha (1,200m)
Drive north of Thimphu and hike through forest trails to the 13th-century Tango Monastery (about 1.5 hours uphill), an important center of the Drukpa Kagyu school. After a traditional lunch, visit the National Institute of Zorig Chusum to observe Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts. Continue to Punakha via Dochula Pass (3,120m), offering panoramic Himalayan views on clear days. Visit Chimi Lhakhang, known as the “Temple of Fertility,” then explore the magnificent 17th-century Punakha Dzong at the confluence of the Phochu and Mochu rivers. Walk across Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge. Overnight at a village homestay or hotel.
Day 3: Punakha – Phobjikha (3,000m)
Hike 2–3 hours through rice fields to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten, perched on a ridge with sweeping valley views. After lunch, drive 3 hours (80km) to the glacial Phobjikha Valley, winter home of endangered black-necked cranes (Nov–Mar). Visit the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most important spiritual centers.
