What you can expect
This is a didgeridoo playing workshop, not an instrument-making workshop. You will use bamboo didgeridoos that have already been carefully handcrafted in Beppu and learn how to play and enjoy this unique instrument.
During the workshop, you will learn the basic techniques of producing and sustaining the sound, abdominal breathing, circular breathing, and how to explore the rich overtones and vibrations of the didgeridoo. We will also explore simple musical approaches and rhythms so that you can experience the instrument not only through breathing and sound, but also as a musical instrument.
You will also learn about the history and cultural background of the didgeridoo, one of the world’s oldest wind instruments, which originated among Aboriginal peoples in Australia.
Your instructor has been playing the didgeridoo for approximately 20 years and has spent time in Australia living and learning alongside Aboriginal people. During this experience, he was also given a totem name. Drawing on these experiences and many years of musical practice, he shares the didgeridoo with travelers from around the world in an accessible and respectful way.
The instruments used in this workshop are made from locally sourced bamboo from Beppu, an area with a long tradition of bamboo craftsmanship. This creates a unique connection between the ancient sound culture of the didgeridoo and Beppu’s own bamboo heritage.
The deep vibrations and natural overtones of the didgeridoo also make it a wonderful instrument for breath awareness, relaxation, and meditation. The workshop concludes with an opportunity to experience the calming resonance of the instrument through sound and meditation.
If you fall in love with the sound, locally made Beppu bamboo didgeridoos are also available for purchase after the workshop.
No previous musical experience is required. Beginners and experienced musicians alike are warmly welcome to discover the sound, breathing techniques, history, and musical possibilities of the didgeridoo here in Beppu.
