What you can expect

  • Athens has been feeding people for a few thousand years. This tour finds the places still doing it the old way.

Over two and a half hours, the route moves between Koukaki, the city's most alive new neighborhood, Plaka, the oldest, and the streets below the Acropolis that have been walked without interruption since ancient times. The food at each stop reflects where it comes from: a family who moved from the mountains of central Greece to open a pastry shop, a couple from western Greece who named their pie bakery after themselves, a deli selling Greek products the way they sold them before supermarkets arrived.

At Alchemist, trigona: crispy phyllo triangles soaked in syrup, filled with whipped cream, served with a freddo espresso, the iced coffee Greece invented and still takes very seriously. At Pandora, you watch phyllo being rolled and filled by hand before eating a fresh pie. At Sinikia to Oniro, a charcuterie board with Greek cheeses, cold cuts, olive oil, and unlimited tsipouro. At the gyro stop, pork or chicken in pita baked that morning. And at the end, loukoumades — the Greek donut — fried to order and finished with honey and cinnamon, in a shop with the Acropolis visible above.

Come hungry and discover why Athens has been doing this so well for so long!
