Perched dramatically on the hill of La Floresta (252 m) above the town of Almodóvar del Río (Córdoba, Andalusia), Almodóvar Castle is a monumental testament to over thirteen centuries of layered history. Originally built around 740 AD by the Umayyads, the fortress features Islamic, Gothic-Mudéjar, and Renaissance design elements. It became a royal residence under Pedro I “el Cruel” in the 14th century, later fell into ruin, and was lovingly restored between 1901 and 1936 by Count Rafael Desmaissières and architect Adolfo Fernández Casanova. Today, this well-preserved castle offers immersive self-guided tours through towers, courtyards, dungeons, and themed exhibition spaces with audiovisual storytelling and panoramic views of the Guadalquivir valley.
