The region is also known for its breathtaking scenery, with terraced rice fields, lush mountains, and beautiful valleys, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking both cultural experiences and natural beauty.

One of the most famous aspects of Tana Toraja culture is its elaborate funeral ceremonies, which can last several days and involve significant rituals, feasts, and even the use of effigies called “tau-tau.” These ceremonies reflect the community’s beliefs about life, death, and the afterlife.

Special note: Traditional funeral ceremonies are occasional cultural events that may be encountered by chance, as may a typical Torajan market selling local fruit and livestock.

Day 1: Makassar - Toraja Highland (Lunch)
Upon arrival in Makassar, meet your guide and transfer to Toraja. Drive for approximately 8 hours, taking in the magnificent mountain passes with the typical Buginese houses on the poles. Stop for lunch at Parepare, a small port situated 155 km north of Makassar.

After lunch, continue driving to Toraja, with a break at Bambapuang Hill to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountains. Arrive in Tana Toraja in the late afternoon and check in to your hotel.

Day 2: Explore Toraja Highland (Breakfast, Lunch)
Spend the day visiting the stone graves with tau-tau installed on a high cliff balcony overlooking the green valley of the Toraja at Lemo. See the royal family tombs at Suaya.

Continue to the traditional carving village at Kete Kesu. Make an easy walk to see a giant tree made as a burial site for a newborn baby who died before teething at Kambira.

After lunch, visit the Jesus effigy that is taller than the Jesus statue in Rio de Janeiro with a beautiful panoramic view from the top of the hills.

Day 3: Toraja - Makassar - Airport (Breakfast, Lunch)
After breakfast, drive to Makassar and transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Stop along the route at a rest area and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
