Overview

  • Achill is home - and my family has called the island home for over 700 years. As the local Aíre for the O’Malley Clan Association and an indirect descendant of Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen, I have so much love for the island’s history, stories and people.

I’ll take you beyond the usual tourist trail to discover Achill’s spectacular beaches, viewpoints, hidden corners and fascinating local history…the best coffee and places you might otherwise drive straight past.

Think of it as a whistle-stop tour with a friend who knows the island from the inside. Come and see Achill through local eyes.

Activity itinerary

Keem Bay

  • 30m
A perfect horseshoe bay containing a popular Blue Flag beach at the head of a valley between the cliffs of Benmore to the west and Croaghaun mountain on the east. At the southern end of the valley, the beach is sheltered to the west by Moyteoge Head, while at the northwestern end of the valley the cliffs of Benmore connect with the spectacular mile long promontory of Achill Head. This spar is the most westerly point on Achill and tails off with two sea stacks called Gaoí Saggart and Carrickakin. Home to the annually visiting basking sharks

Minaun

  • 20m
One of the best viewpoints on the island is from the majestic Minaun Heights. From the top of the cliffs, there are panoramic views of Achill, Clare Island in the distance and Keel Strand below.

Achill henge

  • 20m
Our very own piece of ‘outsider art’, Achill-henge was constructed over a weekend in November 2011 by Joe McNamara, a property developer. A team of workers hauled the large concrete slabs up the hill and sank them in the bog. The local council requested a court order to force McNamara to remove the edifice as it had been built without planning permission. McNamara claimed that the structure was exempt from planning rules as an "ornamental garden" Some would call it a modern day folly, some say it’s the last known resting place of the Celtic Tiger

Dooagh

  • 30m
A beautifully scenic village on the edge of Europe. Between May 2017 and January 2019, Dooagh beach had 300 metres (1,000 ft) of golden sand. Previously, the sand was completely washed away in a storm in 1984, leaving a rocky foreshore that remained until the sand was restored by an unusually high tide in April 2017. Dooagh beach washed away for a second time in early 2019.
