What you can expect

Acatenango Volcano Tour offers an unforgettable hiking adventure with stunning views of Guatemala’s highlands and the active Fuego Volcano. The tour begins in Antigua and includes transportation, local guides, equipment, meals, and an overnight stay at base camp. Hike through forests and volcanic landscapes, enjoy sunset and sunrise views, and experience one of the country’s most iconic adventures.

Day 1 – Acatenango Volcano Hike & Base Camp.

Day 1 begins with an 8:30 a.m. departure from the Antigua meeting point, followed by shared minivan transportation to a supply station where you will receive included food and water, along with a cold-weather jacket, cap, and gloves. You will also have the option to rent backpacks or flashlights if needed.

The journey then continues to the trailhead near La Soledad Village. Upon arrival, you will meet your local guide, receive a safety briefing, and review the hiking plan for the day.

The hike ascends through farmlands, cloud forest, and volcanic terrain, with regular rest stops to hydrate and regain energy. This approximately 5-hour hike is challenging yet rewarding, offering stunning views along the way.

By late afternoon, you will reach the base camp near the summit of Acatenango Volcano. After setting up camp, enjoy a well-deserved rest while taking in breathtaking sunset views and the dramatic eruptions of Volcán de Fuego across the valley.

The day concludes with a warm dinner at camp and an unforgettable night surrounded by stars and volcanic landscapes.

There is an optional hike to Volcán de Fuego on Day 1, which involves an extra challenging trek of approximately 3 hours round trip. Hikers who wish to participate must confirm directly with the local guide.

The additional cost for the Fuego Volcano hike is Q200 per person.

Day 2 – Acatenango Volcano Summit.

Day 2 begins at 4:00 a.m. with an optional sunrise hike to the summit of Acatenango Volcano. Those who choose to participate will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding volcanoes and valleys, and on clear days, views stretching all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

After returning to base camp, enjoy breakfast and pack up before beginning the descent. The hike down follows the same trail, passing through volcanic terrain, cloud forest, and farmland.

By late morning or early afternoon, the group will arrive back at the trailhead, followed by transportation back to Antigua, concluding an unforgettable volcano adventure.
