What you can expect

  • Discover a lesser-known side of Aberdeen on this 1.5-hour private walking tour with a dedicated local guide. Explore the city’s history, from its early development as a fishing settlement to its growth as a major centre of the European oil industry, while learning about the people and events that shaped its past.

Through historical accounts and local stories, discover aspects of Aberdeen’s social and legal history, including body snatching, kidnapping, witchcraft accusations and public executions. Learn how crime was investigated, how justice was administered in earlier centuries, and how these events reflected the beliefs and practices of their time.

    Tour highlights include:

    • The history of public executions and beheadings in Aberdeen
    • The local legend of Marion Hardie
    • Historical witch trials and the people accused
    • Aberdeen’s former gallows and the history of capital punishment
    • The killings associated with the Saltoun Arms

With flexible start times and meeting points, this private guided walk offers a different perspective on Aberdeen’s heritage, exploring historical events, local traditions and stories that are less familiar than the city’s better-known landmarks.
