The other option is a visit of Metz and its beautiful city center. The city has been known since pre-Roman antiquity. Commercial city of the Carolingian Empire, Metz is the seat of a powerful bishopric, and a trading and banking city of importance. Metz became a protectorate and a French stronghold in the 16th century, before being annexed by the German Empire at the end of the 19th century, which named the region Alsace-Moselle. Then, it became French again after the First World War, it was annexed by the Third Reich from 1940 to 1944. Those changes of nationalities had a big impact on the wonderful architecture of the city, that is now famous for its cathedral, train station and Opera. Discover the city during a walking tour and then enjoy a lunch. Then, leave by car for Strasbourg.
