Valley of Gangala

Okinawa
Peer between the tendril-like vines that hang down from the forest canopy and explore ancient limestone caves in this mystical attraction in Nanjo.

The Valley of Gangala is a magical grove of bamboo forests and tropical foliage reaching for the sunlight from a network of limestone caves. Wander through verdant forest, brushing aside long vines to see ancient trees and tropical foliage. In the fascinating cave system, you’ll see stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising up from the cave floor. Join a guided tour of the intriguing caves and spend some time exploring the fairytale-like forest.

Enter the Valley of Gangala via the cave tunnel that has been transformed into a café and meeting point. From here, embark on your guided tour of the cave formations and lush forest. Follow your guide along the nature trails and see immense stands of ancient bamboo growing in the filtered light against the backdrop of limestone formations.

A diverse variety of tropical forest plants can be seen competing for sunlight. Listen to the gentle sounds of the Yuuhi River flowing alongside the forest. Get your photograph taken with Ufushu Gajumaru, the ancient banyan tree that is believed to contain the spirit of Kijimunaa.

Make your way into the caves to experience the mysterious power of the Valley of Gangala. The rock formations have been revered by Okinawans as symbols for fertility. It is an old tradition for Okinawan couples to come here to wish for a baby.

The final stop on the tour is a large cavern that has been excavated by archaeologists. A stone coffin containing the 3,000-year-old Minatogawa Man was discovered here in 2008.

The Valley of Gangala is located 10 minutes’ drive west of downtown Nanjo City. The area is only accessible via 90-minute guided tours, which depart four times a day, year-round. Entrance fees are discounted for students and free for children. You’ll be given some insect repellant at the start of your tour, but you can also bring your own. Tours are only available in Japanese, but are wonderful for the sights alone. You can visit the Cave Café for free during business hours and enjoy a coffee, tea or light meal in the spectacular cave setting.
