Town Beach

Town Beach showing landscape views as well as a small group of people
This family-friendly beach has an exciting water playground, barbecue facilities and a café with stunning views.

Broome’s Town Beach faces out into the beautiful turquoise-hued waters of Roebuck Bay and is a fantastic spot for an afternoon by the ocean. Visit Town Beach to enjoy the scenic waterfront views and take advantage of the excellent amenities, which include a fun-filled playground and water park for kids, as well as a café and barbecue facilities.

Pack a picnic and your towel and head to the little beach park to the south of town. Protected by the narrow break wall of McDaniel’s Lookout, Town Beach is a sheltered and picturesque place to bring friends or family and spend some time relaxing. Kids will be delighted by the brightly coloured playground, which features shaded areas and exciting water features. The refreshing cascades, squirters and big buckets will keep children of all ages entertained. There are also swings and climbing play equipment.

Stroll along the red ochre-flecked sands and take in views of Roebuck Bay. Wander to McDaniel’s Lookout and see if any of the local fishers are having any luck on the break wall. At very low tides, you can take a half-hour walk along the tidal flats to see the wreckages of seaplanes from World War II. Be careful with your timing, however, as the tidal variance in Broome is extreme and water levels can change unexpectedly. Wear sturdy shoes and watch for tropical sea stars on the sand underfoot.

There is a café near the beach where you can sip a coffee or cool drink in the shade. Chat with the locals and plan your next adventure in Broome and the Kimberley region.

Town Beach is free to visit and is open year-round. It is at its most pleasant in the dry season between May and October. Visit early in the morning to avoid the heat of the sun or in the evening for a barbecue dinner with Indian Ocean views. At certain times of the year, you’ll be able to see the beautiful “Staircase to the Moon” phenomenon that occurs when the moonrise reflects on the tidal flats at low tide.
