The High Line Park

The High Line Park showing a garden, a city and street scenes
This creative exploration of the potential for urban renewal is a pleasant place to go for a walk next to one of the trendiest neighborhoods in New York.

The High Line Park, known as “the High Line” to locals, was not always the handsomely trimmed and art-filled walkway it is today. The New York Central Railroad once ran underneath the elevated space now filled with shrubbery, trees and flowers. The rail trail conversion of this track is one of the few beautification projects in New York City that also manages to draw upon rich urban history. See for yourself why over 5 million people visit the High Line annually.

Tour the modern sculptures that you’ll find throughout the High Line. The park also hosts temporary art exhibitions throughout the year. Admire the rows of perennials, shrubs and trees. Species that grew on the original rail bed are also part of this landscape.

The neighborhood surrounding the High Line, the Meatpacking District, is one of the most remarkable in the city. What was once the site of hundreds of meatpacking plants is now a luxury shopping and clubbing destination. Along the cobblestone streets are recessed storefronts for luxury outlets and spacious restaurants. Browse the tastefully decorated stores and then walk up to the Chelsea Market, a popular indoor food hall.

While you are in the area, be sure to visit the Hudson River Park, a beautiful waterside park, just a block west of the High Line.

The Standard Hotel at the High Line also straddles this park and ascends high into the city skyline. For an authentic sample of New York City luxury, ride one of the eccentrically decorated elevators to the top floor. Sip a Dark and Stormy cocktail at the rooftop bar and watch the beautiful sunset over New Jersey.

Get to the High Line by taking the subway or a taxi to the westernmost end of 14th Street and walk south. On the way, you will pass the Chelsea Market. Just two blocks south is the West Village. Keep these in mind just in case you get some time to do more exploring in this lively area after your calming High Line walk.
