Po Lin Monastery

Big Buddha featuring mountains
This spiritual place with its famous statue to Buddha draws visitors from all over the world to absorb its special atmosphere.

When Po Lin Monastery was founded by three monks in the first decade of the 20th century, it was a remote, isolated outpost hidden in the dense undergrowth of Lantau Island’s mountainous interior. Today it is one of the world’s most important Buddhist centres and a popular visitor attraction in its own right. Its inclusion on the global tourist map is mainly down to the Tian Tan Buddha statue, or “Big Buddha” as it’s more commonly known. This giant representation of the spiritual leader rises 34 metres into the air and is reached by hundreds of steps. Pilgrims come from across Asia and further afield to pay their respects at the foot of the statue, as well as to admire the panoramic sea and mountain views.Po Lin Monastery also welcomes visitors to its tranquil setting. Here you can enter some of the older temples, including the Great Hall of Treasure and the Hall of Ti-tsang Bodhisattva, and see the on-going building work that is extending the complex and improving its facilities. Don’t forget to listen out for the bell which rings every seven minutes, 108 times a day the bell is said to have powers to cure people of 108 different types of vexation. After you’ve heard the chimes, head for the exhibition hall to admire the decorations and inscriptions on the bell itself. Then wander among the fragrant flower beds in the garden before heading home to contemplate your day of discovery. There are several ways to reach Po Lin Monastery, but perhaps the most impressive route is by cable car from Tung Chung, especially on a clear, bright day. The Ngong Ping 360 offers breathtaking views as you gently climb from the beach to the mountains. The cable car terminal is about a five-minute walk from the MTR Tung Chung Station, Exit B. A slower but less vertiginous route is by ferry from Central Pier No. 6 to Mui Wo, then New Lantau Bus No. 2 to Ngong Ping. The Monastery is open to visitors every day and serves vegetarian lunches.
